AgriSea Field Trial
One of our overarching goals this season is to begin the work of rehabilitating the soils in our newly acquired fields. Our baseline soil testing from last summer found these fields deeply compacted, nutrient deficient, and virtually devoid of biological life. Changing these conditions and bringing back abundant fertility won’t be something that happens in a year or two. It’s going to be a slow process integrating grazers, overseeding, and targeted soil amendments.
The fields have already been grazed and frost seeded this season. Now, we are very excited to integrate AgriSea—a seaweed based bio stimulant into our upcoming field amendment applications. The kelp sourced for this product is grown in part by regenerative ocean farmers in the GreenWave organization. If you’re an eco-nerd who isn’t already familiar with GreenWave, please enjoy some inspiring work happening here on planet Earth.
The grazing action and manure provided by the sheep earlier this summer has helped lay a foundation for life in the soil, and now we can feed that life with beneficial microbes and micronutrients from AgriSea’s fermented bio-stimulant. (You can learn a little more about their company story here.)
With oversight from our team soil scientist, Nour El-Naboulsi, we’ll be monitoring the impact of this amendment and specifically looking at potential increased nutrient uptake which could be measurable in the meat we produce over time. Exciting stuff!
